President Issues New H-1B Executive Order and Extends Entry Restrictions
On September 18, 2026, President Trump issued an executive order directing the Departments of State, Labor, and Homeland Security to take steps to strengthen compliance and coordination in the H-1B program. The order also calls for consideration of employers’ recent or planned layoffs of similarly situated U.S. workers when administering the H-1B program. That same day, the President issued a proclamation that includes a 12-month extension of restrictions on entry for certain H-1B workers and a $100,000 application fee, subject to a national-interest exception.
