Politico reports that judges have ruled against ICE’s detention tactics more than 16,000 times over the past year, as the agency’s expanded mandatory detention policy strains courts, attorneys, and detainees nationwide. AILA Past President Kelli Stump describes the toll the policy has taken on her clients, noting, “Families are scared. They need someone to yell at, and they’re yelling at me.” With district courts overwhelmingly rejecting the policy and conflicting appellate rulings creating a split that could reach the Supreme Court, AILA Executive Director Ben Johnson shared the article on X and Bluesky, writing, “Behind every case is a person: parents separated from children, workers detained after years of building lives here, and families left searching for answers.
