NPR: New Report Shows the Economic Toll of ICE Raids
NPR reports that a new University of Illinois Chicago study found that immigration enforcement actions beginning in early 2025 significantly reduced consumer mobility in Chicago, as fear of ICE raids led to a 9% drop in retail visits and a 10% drop in restaurant visits. The resulting decline in consumer mobility cost retail shops and restaurants in nonimmigrant neighborhoods an estimated $1.26 billion and cost the state of Illinois $107 million in lost tax revenue, with the decline persisting for about a year.
